Hancock Park District is facilitating a series of Self-guided Float Trips with shuttle service this season. Canoeists and kayakers will have the opportunity to see wildlife, enjoy scenic beauty, and spend quality time together in the great outdoors. Trip #1 is scheduled for Saturday, May 8, Trip #2 is planned for Saturday, May 15 and Trip #3 is set for Saturday, May 22. Each trip will begin at 9 a.m.
Liberty Landing to Blanchard Landing is a popular half-day trip on the Blanchard River Water Trail. At 9.3 miles, it is scenic, has no foreseeable obstacles or portages (unless trees block the trails), and there are bends, narrow sections, and riffles to make it interesting and fun. Wildlife sightings are common. Without stops and with strong and steady paddling, this trip should take approximately three hours.
Participation is available for adults and youth age 16 to 17 with the ability to swim (youth under the age of 16 are welcome to participate but must be accompanied by an adult age 18 or older). Watercraft availability includes tandem canoes and solo kayaks. Specify watercraft preference when registering. The weight limit for a kayak is 275 pounds. The weight limit for a canoe is 900 pounds. Maximum participation per trip is 10 (two participants per canoe).
Pre-registration is required. Click here to register by 4:30 p.m. on the Friday prior to each trip. The fee is $20 per person. Signing an Assumption of Risk/Liability Release/Waiver of all Claims form and/or a Parental Consent form is required. Forms will be available at Liberty Landing prior to the trip. Canoeists and kayakers have to arrange for their own transportation by being dropped off at Liberty Landing before the trip and picked up at Blanchard Landing after the trip.
Dress and plan accordingly for the weather. Wear tennis shoes that can get wet. Wool, fleece and fast drying clothes are recommended in spring when the water and air temperature are cold. Alcohol is not permitted. Canoes, kayaks, personal flotation devices and paddles will be provided. Trips will be cancelled in the event of flooding, rain, thunder and lightning and strong wind.
