Project FeederWatch

Project FeederWatch began in 1987 and is operated by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in partnership with the National Audubon Society, Bird Studies Canada, and Canadian Nature Federation. Project FeederWatch is a winter-long survey of birds that visit feeders at backyards, nature centers, community areas and other locales in North America. FeederWatchers periodically count the highest numbers of each species they see at their feeders from November through early April. Their efforts help scientists track broadscale movements of winter bird populations and long-term trends in bird distribution and abundance.

Each year in fall and winter, Hancock Park District submits monthly Project FeederWatch tallies compiled at the Oakwoods Nature Preserve’s Discovery Center by HPD staff and VIPs (Volunteer In Parks.) Birds who feed outside the Window on Wildlife are documented on two consecutive days every other week. The results are submitted to the continental count.

Watch for the Winter 2020-2021 HPD Project FeederWatch results here as tallies are added each month.
