Erin Tannehill has been named the 2017 Charlie Meadows Award winner by the Hancock Park District. Each year since 2012, the award has been presented to the VIP (Volunteer in Parks) who most exhibits characteristics of leadership, enthusiasm for the projects and services he or she performs, and for their willingness to promote volunteerism with others.
Tannehill first became acquainted with the Hancock Park System as a child participant in HPD programs and events. Tannehill is now a high school senior. She combines both her experiences as an HPD program participant and homeschool student by volunteering at HPD’s popular “Homeschoolers in the Park” program as well as other events.
HPD Program Specialist Katie Mehlow worked with Tannehill during the summer season’s American Girl Tea. “She lent boxes of her own antiques, dolls, books, and games for displays and kept coming up with great ideas,” said Mehlow. “Erin is enthusiastic, dependable and truly cares about the park programs’ successes.”
Tannehill was honored at the February 13, 2018 meeting of the HPD Board of Park Commissioners meeting at Oakwoods Nature Preserve’s Richard S. “Doc” Phillips Discovery Center, located at 1400 Oakwoods Lane, off CR 144, west of Findlay. HPD Naturalist Michelle Rumschlag presented her with a commemorative plaque and Tannehill’s name is included on a perpetual plaque that honors all Charlie Meadows Award winners. That plaque is displayed at the HPD Administrative Office at 1424 E. Main Cross Street.
The purpose of the VIP Program is to offer opportunities for county and area residents to give personal time and offer their special talents to supplement the HPD staff in providing quality programs, maintaining parks for public use and preserving natural areas. The Charlie Meadows Award is named for the park district’s first volunteer coordinator. In 1982, Meadows was instrumental in launching the Helping Hands program to get people involved in the parks.
